How Hiring a VBA Works

  1. 1

    Choose a VBA

Browse the directory or send a request. Listings show a VBA's location and background, and whether they are currently accepting work.

  2. 2

    Agree on terms

You work with the VBA directly and agree on pricing and turnaround between you. There is no middleman and no staffing agency.

  3. 3

    Send the client file

You send the client's information and supporting documents. You get back a complete, accurate petition ready for your review.

  4. 4

    Review and file

You review and approve the petition and remain the attorney of record. Many VBAs can also handle the e-filing for you.

What to Look for in a VBA

A VBA drafts; you decide. Only a licensed attorney can give legal advice, so questions about which chapter to file or which exemptions to claim go to you. Read how a VBA differs from a bankruptcy petition preparer.

Common Questions

What does it cost to use NAVBA?+
There is no fee to use the directory: you can browse listings and contact any VBA directly for free. NAVBA is not a middleman and does not take a cut. You agree on pricing with the VBA you hire.
Can I start with a single petition?+
Yes. You are buying a service rather than hiring staff, so there is no payroll, no benefits and no workspace to provide, and you pay for the work you send. A good way to start is to send one case and review the result. Agree on the details with the VBA first.
What if no VBA is listed for my state?+
Send a request and tell us where you file. We'll point you to NAVBA members who are accepting work. VBAs work remotely, so a VBA in another state may still be able to help; ask about their experience with your courts.
How do I know a VBA is right for my firm?+
Start with the listing, then talk to the VBA. Ask about experience with the districts you file in and the software your firm uses, and about turnaround. Certification is optional: some NAVBA members have passed the Chapter 7 and/or Chapter 13 certification exams offered through 713training.com and others have not, and whether to require it is your decision.
